The Tech Industry in Montreal: Data & Insights

Montreal is the second-largest city in Canada and one of the leading tech hubs in North America. In the last decade, the city invested a lot in tech education and excelled in quality services provided by local and foreign companies based in Montreal.

At this point, there are more than 280 IT companies registered on Tech Behemoths that can be discovered right now. However, there are a lot more companies that are located in the city. The IT industry is divided into several segments, which are more sophisticated than regular IT industries: AI, Aeronautics, Visual Effects & Animation,  Video Games and Health Technologies are what the local companies are focused on. This makes Montreal a more creative IT location compared to Vancouver for example.

On the salary competitiveness part, the Montreal IT industry is significantly lower compared to Vancouver. While the average wage in Vancouver in the IT sector is around $100K/year, in Montreal is only $45K/year. Yet, there must be some aspects related to taxes that should be taken into consideration.

But things don’t stop here in the Montreal IT industry - There are a significant number of accelerators, incubators, and programs for IT companies, startups, and the entire sector. Centech, Defi 3737, Diagram, District 3, or Founder Institute Montreal are only a few programs/accelerators/incubators to name that is constantly investing and do the change in the local IT industry.

Overall, Montreal is a good destination to start a business, find a trustworthy partner, or implement an idea whether it’s connected to digital or not. Sure thing, the city is a promising place for IT companies, and will continue to develop its producing capacities and as well expand their range of services.
