Lagos: Africa's Thriving Tech Hub and the Challenges Ahead

Lagos is one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa cities and the fastest-growing one in the world.

It is often called Africa’s Silicon Valley and rightly so, because it has an impressive tech startup scene numbering over 460 tech startups and hubs and is also home to some of the most successful tech companies, including Jumia, Flutterwave, and Andela.

Top universities in Nigeria such as Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Yaba College of Technology are here.

The city is quite young due to its large and young population. It is curious that the median age in Lagos is just 21 years old, and over half of the population is under the age of 30. This provides a large number of potential good students, future workers, and entrepreneurs in the field of technology.

The Nigerian government supports the growth of the tech sector and is willing to implement a number of initiatives to support tech startups. For example, in 2022, the Nigerian government launched a $618M fund for young tech entrepreneurs.

Of course, Lagos also faces some challenges as a tech city and the biggest one is the city's infrastructure, especially traffic congestion and unreliable power supply.  Actually, this is a major challenge for tech startups, which often rely on a reliable internet connection and access to electricity. Despite this, Lagos is a great tech city with a lot to offer.
