Tucanoo Solutions Ltd is a small UK software consultancy, founded in 2011, that specialises in keeping business-critical applications healthy for the long term. We work mainly in Java, Spring Boot, Grails and Groovy, with React on the front end, PostgreSQL or MySQL underneath and AWS for hosting.

Much of our work starts with code that has fallen behind: a Grails application several major versions out of date, an unsupported database, or a Windows desktop system the whole business still runs on. We bring these systems onto a current, supported stack in planned stages, covered by automated tests, so data and day-to-day workflows come through the move intact.

A few examples:

• For Mapolitical, a geospatial SaaS used by UK utilities and public bodies, we took the platform from Grails 1.3.7 to 6.2 and moved it to PostgreSQL with PostGIS in four months. Its slowest page fell from around 20 seconds to a tenth of a second.

• For a UK market research fieldwork agency, we replaced an ageing Superbase desktop database with a web application that handles everything from interviewer allocation to payroll, and we have looked after it since 2017.

• For the UN TIR secretariat in Geneva, we delivered seven consecutive contracts, including the eTIR National Application, since released as open source and recognised as a UN Digital Public Good.

• For The Legal Assistant, a US practice management product, we turned a Windows desktop application into a SaaS platform and continue to extend it.

We also build new web applications and APIs, and we make our own product, DavKit, a WebDAV toolkit that lets Spring Boot and Grails applications open Office documents directly in desktop Word and Excel.
