As an early-stage startup, we entered into a fixed-term agreement and paid upfront for KYB credits, expecting a degree of flexibility as our needs developed over time. A portion of those credits ultimately went unused during the contract period. When we asked about preserving the unused balance, we were told that any remaining prepaid credits would expire after one year unless we paid an additional fee to extend them for another 12 months. We were not willing to spend more simply to retain value we had already paid for. This is something startups should examine carefully before entering a similar arrangement. The structure requires payment in full upfront, unused credits do not roll over at no cost, and any unspent balance may be lost if usage grows more slowly than anticipated or demand changes over time. For a startup, where forecasting is rarely precise, that kind of model can create unnecessary downside. In our case, it did not reflect the kind of flexibility we look for in a long-term partner, and we have decided to move to another provider. We’re sharing this so other founders can assess these terms carefully and make a fully informed decision before committing to prepaid credits under this kind of structure.
