A Bank was using a popular UI library which guarantee fast UI rerendering. Yet, the initial loading time wasn't the best and the user had a hard time as white screen was showing up for some time.

After a few meetings we were able to come up with several possible solutiosns:

-Implementing server side rendering

-The resource the backed serves to be loaded with some static scripts that build some UI until the JS loads and create the final UI

-Code splitting that will guarantee fast first load time

After digging into the backend code, we suggested excluding the first option for Server side rendering as the backend is on Java platform. We tested the scenarios and got some unsatisfying results. A slowdown for the server side operations and the implementation wouldn’t be worth the time given the tested results. The perfect option was moving that part of the backend that serves the UI on Node js but that wasnt possible at the time.

The solution was implementing the inline scripts - js and css which created some shadowed content and a loader. Thus, the user was able to see some UI giving the impression the app is loading faster. The approach seems to be very simple, yet it is very effective as the user is tricked into believing the UI almost there. The while screen is gone and the goal achieved.

The code splitting of the app- that reduced further the loading time as the app loads only the crucial part of the applications.The approach needed some more code refactoring.The rest code was downloaded in background or when the user actually needed to see the exact screen and functionality. That approach guaranteed even faster loading time of the application.

The problem was very common, yet the most obvious solution might not be the very best. The initial idea of the client was to buy more expensive machines that will deliver faster the application. We managed to suggest 2 solutions that were cheaper and far more effective from business point of view.
